What it replaces
The jobs it takes off an engineer's plate:
Finding and installing ten different tools
Every tool an engineer reaches for, installed and ready in minutes, in one app, instead of a folder of downloads and scripts to rebuild on every new laptop.
Hunting for a tool mid-incident
Path ping, Discovery, Console, SNMP and packet capture are already on the machine when the live issue hits.
Standing up lab servers to test a service
Ten server hosts: Syslog, TFTP, SNMP traps, RADIUS, TACACS+, DHCP, DNS, HTTP and FTP built in, plus SFTP/SCP receive through the computer's own OpenSSH server.
Tracking certificate expiry by hand
Cert fleet keeps a saved list of your hosts (or your customers') and sweeps it in one click. Anything at 30 days or less, or 7 days or less, is flagged before it becomes an outage.
Running show commands device by device
Multi-host run sends the same command to many devices over SSH and compares the answers side by side. Read-only by default.
Handover notes written from memory
Findings go into the Case you're working as you go; the End-of-shift report hands the day over in one file, with secrets masked.
What security and IT will ask
- Does it phone home?
- No telemetry, no analytics, no usage tracking. If you're signed in, the app checks its license when you open Account and in a few launch cases; it sends only the sign-in token, no device or network details. Pro keeps working offline for 30 days after the last successful check. Opening the AI Deputy with a cloud provider also fetches the public model list (subnetslinger.com/models.json). Everything else is a tool you ran. Every outside host is on the firewall allowlist.
- Does it send our network data anywhere?
- Not to us, ever: every tool runs on the engineer's computer and results stay there. A few tools reach a public service when you run them because that is their job (public IP, WHOIS, speed test); they're listed on the Privacy page. The AI Deputy and Posse are off by default. If you turn them on, the question and tool output go straight to the provider you choose, on your own key, or stay on a local Ollama model. Secret-shaped text is stripped first; that's a pattern match, not a guarantee.
- Does it need admin rights?
- Not for the core toolkit: it runs on a clean install with no admin and no extra software, and Windows installs from the Microsoft Store. A few optional add-ons need admin once: the Npcap packet-capture driver and OpenSSH Server on Windows, and on Linux the installer grants capture rights to a helper only, so the app stays unprivileged. On Linux, the DNS and DHCP server hosts need their real low ports. Details: Setup & requirements.
- Where is the data stored?
- On the engineer's machine. Windows: %APPDATA%\SubnetSlinger and Documents\SubnetSlinger. Linux: ~/.config/SubnetSlinger and ~/Documents/SubnetSlinger. macOS: in the user's account, with Vault secrets in the Mac's Keychain. The Vault is AES-256-GCM. There's no cloud sync; a backup is a file you move yourself. For the license we hold only an email, a random account ID, the tier and trial dates, a purchase record and a sign-in session record (IP and app or browser): what we collect.
- How are downloads signed?
- Windows installs from the Microsoft Store, which signs the package. macOS is signed with an Apple Developer ID and notarized by Apple. Linux is GPG-signed with an offline key and ships signed checksums and an SBOM; the macOS download has a checksum and GPG signature too. Copy-ready verify steps, and the supply-chain detail.
- What about MCP (letting an AI app call its tools)?
- It runs only when an AI app on the same computer starts it, and offers 17 read-only diagnostics with secrets masked; requests are logged locally, never sent to us. On macOS it's off by default and needs Pro. On Windows and Linux 1.3 it has no on/off switch or Pro check, so leave it unconfigured if you don't use it; from version 1.4 it's off until you turn it on, needs Pro, and reaches only the hosts you allow. MCP on the Privacy page.
